Description of Cell Coverage Map

What is it?

Cell Coverage Map is a specialized application for Android devices that allows to create coverage map of GSM/UMTS/LTE networks. It displays a map with markers which color depends on a level of signal measured by your phone in a given location. Green markers are placed in locations with a high signal strength; red markers indicate that coverage is rather bad. In the alternative color scheme a poor signal is marked in blue.

The app allows to:
• check strength level of surrounding base transceiver stations (BTS);
• check current cellular operator parameters (CID, LAC/TAC, network type);
• put coloured markers on a map and create coverage map;
• export coverage map.

User interface

The app's user interface consists of a map and a set of information bars.

The bar in the top of a screen contains two buttons. The first one turns on a background measuring service, the second one displays the app's menu.

A map takes the rest part of a screen. There may be two sources of maps: Google Maps or OpenStreetMap (the source can be set in app's preferences).

There are two information panels over the map. They can be hidden in the app's preferences.

Cell data panel is in the left top corner of a screen. There is a following information here:
• current network type (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA/HSDPA/HSUPA/LTE);
• cell identifier (CID);
• Location Area Code (LAC) — for GSM/UMTS networks;
• Tracking Area Code (TAC) — for LTE networks;
• Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI);
• Reference Signals Received Power (RSRP) — for LTE networks.

In the right top corner of the screen there is a coloured scale which helps to match marker colour and a signal strength.

How it works?

If the background measuring service is turned on the app begins to create coverage map. A new marker is put to the map if the following conditions are met:
• the location is determined;
• the location accuracy is less than the limit set in preferences;
• distance between the location and the previous marker is bigger than value set in preferences.

Map with markers can be saved as a PNG file. The markers data can also be exported as KML file (for Google Earth) or CSV file (comma-separated values).

Cell locations

DB Manager allows to import user data about base station locations. After this the app can display them on a map. The app supports CLF format of version 3.0. More details about CLF files can be found on this page.

CLF files are not provided with the application.
